Who we are
Carers NT is the key organisation representing the Northern Territory’s estimated 30,000 family carers, who provide:
‘Unpaid care and support to family members and friends who have a disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness or who are frail.’
Formed in 1992 Carers NT is an incorporated body which exists, according to our constitution to:
1. Improve the health, wellbeing , resilience and financial security of carers; and
2. Promote the recognition of caring as a shared responsibility of family, community, business and government
Carers NT operates from offices in Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs with a budget of approximately $5m per annum, employs 38 (fte) staff, and provides services to individual carers across the Territory as well as advocating on behalf of all Territory carers

Organisational focus (What we do)
Carers Australia represents the needs and interests of carers at a National Level level through:
• Advocating for carers needs and interests in the public arena
• Influencing government and stakeholder policies and programs at the national level through conducting research and pilot projects, giving presentations and participating in a wide range of inquiries, reviews and policy forums
• Networking and forming strategic partnerships with other organisations to achieve positive outcomes for carers
• Providing carers with information and education resources, undertaking community awareness raising activities and coordinating and facilitating joint work between the state and territory organisations on matters of national significance
Community Focus - Supporting Family Carers
Carers Australia works with a network of carers associations in each state and territory to improve the lives of carers. Together, we provide important services like counselling, advice, advocacy, education and training. We also promote recognition of carers to governments, businesses and the wider public.
Caring can be a highly rewarding experience when appropriate support is available. However, without such support, the responsibility of caring can have an adverse effect on a carer's physical, mental and emotional health as well as an impact on their short and long-term financial security. The demands of caring can make it harder to have a job, go to school or to simply take some time to relax. It is important to remember that whatever affects carers also affects their whole family.
At the same time, carers are providing $30.5 billion dollars worth of care each year. Our health system could not survive without carers.
We believe that all carers are entitled to the same rights, choices and opportunities as other Australians. This is based not only on a sense of social responsibility, but also on the understanding that what is good for carers is good for their families and their community
