DAY 2:Arnhem Land Adventure, Mikinj Valley, Oenpelli Aboriginal Settlement

Arnhemland is Aboriginal land a unique area where Aboriginal people live a lifestyle more closely linked to their true culture and heritage. Our 4WD tour will visit Mikinj Valley. A superbly scenic area of sandstone outcrops, and escarpments, forest, floodplains and billabongs. This is an area where Aboriginal people have lived for many thousands of years – The same region that over time has seen the coming of civilisation, the explorers, the missionaries and more recently pastoralists, buffalo and crocodile hunters. By arrangement and co-operation of the Manilakarr people, this unique tour will allow you to see places inaccessible to most. Hear of traditional land ownership, learn of bush skills, hunting and food gathering and preparation (bush tucker), view Aboriginal art in its natural state – no fences and barriers, or other groups; just art as it was created many years ago. Most tours are guided or accompanied by an Aboriginal person. On the return trip to Darwin, keep an eye out for giant termite mounds as you watch the changing light of day over the flood plains. (L)

Injalak arts and craft – is visited Monday to Friday. Injalak is not regularly available on weekends and public holidays, and sometimes closed for cultural reasons. As an alternative we will visit a very special area as guest of the Bunidj people. Cannon Hill and Hawk Dreaming on the flood plains of Kakadu and Arnhemland. Spectacular towering escarpments and brimming billabongs, and ancient rock Paintings. This alternative also applies when seasonal flooding and extreme tides effect crossing the East Alligator River.
